Helion Energy
Helion Energy is an Everett, Washington fusion power company building commercial fusion electricity generators using a pulsed, magneto-inertial field-reversed configuration (FRC) approach burning deuterium and helium-3. Helion forms two FRC plasmas at opposite ends of its machine, accelerates them toward each other, merges them, and uses pulsed magnetic compression to drive them to fusion conditions; the expanding plasma pushes against the confining magnetic field and induces current directly back into the machine's capacitor bank via Faraday's Law, recapturing electricity without a steam cycle. Founded in 2013 by David Kirtley, John Slough, Chris Pihl, and George Votroubek, Helion is chaired by Sam Altman and has progressed through seven generations of prototypes (IPA, Venti, Trenta, and most recently Polaris) on its way to commercial generators. Polaris, brought online in late 2024, is the company's seventh-generation machine and the first privately developed fusion device to demonstrate measurable deuterium-tritium fusion, reaching 150 million degrees Celsius in February 2026. In May 2023, Helion signed the world's first commercial fusion power purchase agreement, committing to deliver 50 MWe to Microsoft starting in 2028, with the Orion plant planned for the Malaga, Washington area; a subsequent agreement with Nucor targets a 500-MWe facility. Helion is funded by Sam Altman, SoftBank Vision Fund 2, Nucor, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and others, with a reported $5.4B valuation as of early 2025. The company's revenue model is fusion electricity sales under long-term PPAs; Helion has no public developer API, SDK, or open-source software product, and its public GitHub organization (Helion-Energy) contains only forks of plasma-physics simulation tools (WarpX, FerroX, pyamrex, maestrowf).
