PenFed Credit Union

PenFed Credit Union (Pentagon Federal Credit Union), founded in 1935 and headquartered in McLean, Virginia, is a federally chartered credit union regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and one of the largest credit unions in the United States, with roughly 2.9 million members and tens of billions of dollars in assets. It is a not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperative that originally served the U.S. military and defense community and now offers open membership, providing mortgages, auto loans, credit cards, personal loans, and deposit accounts. On the open-finance front, PenFed runs an internal API-management practice — MuleSoft/Anypoint is the backbone of its digital-banking platform and an Apigee-backed developer portal host exists at developer.penfed.org (with an api.penfed.org gateway) — but neither surface is publicly documented or openly reachable: there is no public developer program, no published OpenAPI, and consumer account data is made available to members through permissioned third-party aggregators such as Plaid rather than a directly documented FDX or CFPB Section 1033 data-access API.

human only

Index entry only — little beyond a description and a link, and nothing machine-readable enough for an agent to act on without a human reading the site first.

Kin Score

API Evangelist profiles PenFed Credit Union the way a machine reads it — 1 machine-readable artifact, pulled from the provider's own public surface and indexed so a developer, an analyst, or an AI agent can evaluate it against every other provider on the network.

Every provider in the network is reduced to the same set of machine-readable artifacts — OpenAPI contracts, event specifications, GraphQL schemas, runnable collections, pricing and rate-limit signals, security posture, OAuth scopes, and the agent surfaces (MCP servers and skills) that let software drive the API on its own. We profile them because the interface is the part of a company you can actually inspect: it is a truer signal of what a provider does than any marketing page. From those artifacts we compute the Kin Score — PenFed Credit Union scores 14.5/100 (minimal), with a separate agent-readiness read of 0/100 (human only). The full breakdown is below, followed by every artifact we hold — each card links through to its machine-readable definition on apis.io.

Kin Score

This is the API Evangelist rating — a single, repeatable read computed from the artifacts on this page. Green fill is points earned; the red track is points possible, so every bar shows earned-versus-possible at a glance.
